Former Bachelor contender Demi Burnett has been diagnosed with autism.

Sharing the news with her fans, Burnett revealed on Instagram that she had undergone a psychological evaluation that had uncovered her diagnosis.

“I did a psychological evaluation and I’m autistic,” she wrote. “There is a huge stigma when it comes to autism. I encourage you to be open-minded and accepting. Swipe for some “memes” that might be helpful when dealing with an autistic person. All I want is to have a better quality of life.”

She continued, “I will share more on my story of my evaluation and how I got to this point and all of my pain and struggles along the way. I want to make sure anyone who is/was feeling like me can know you aren’t alone. It can get better! And most importantly it isn’t your fault.”

According to the NHS, autism is not an illness but a disorder that means “your brain works in a different way from other people”. It adds that people with the disorder may find communication and understanding other people’s emotions difficult, leading to feelings of upset or anxiety.

Burnett featured in the 23rd season of The Bachelor alongside Colton Underwood. She also appeared in two seasons of Bachelor in Paradise.
