Leylah Fernandez Defends Her Monterrey Open Title

19-year-old Leylah Fernandez has successfully defended her Monterrey Open title, winning it for a second consecutive time.
The Canadian came from behind, on the brink of defeat, to claim the Abierto GNP Seguros title by saving five match points.
Fernandez beat Colombia’s Camila Osorio in a three-set thriller, finishing 6-7(5) 6-4 7-6(3), with the action coming to ahead after almost three hours.

“Today it was a very, very tough match, not only physically or tennis-wise, mentally,” said second-seeded Fernandez. “Camila, she’s a tough player to play against. She’s very crafty, she does slices, high balls, it’s very unpredictable.”
She adds: “I’m very, very happy to have gone through these hard moments, and have fought, found solutions.
“And Camila, I hope we have many, many more finals like this, because without her, I don’t think this tournament, this final, wouldn’t be [as] special.”
Fernandez is now looking for more success at the Indian Wells 2022, with the hope of improving on her previous fourth round exit last time round.
