Chelsea have been handed a devastating blow in their Champions League defence after being thumped 3-1 by Real Madrid

The London club have been left with a mountain to climb in the second leg, where they travel to Madrid.

Karim Benzema’s quick-fire double halfway through the first half rattled Chelsea, who were largely punished for errors. All hope was not lost, however, when Kai Havertz’s pulled one back for the home side just before the half-time whistle.

But just moments after play resumed, Benzema completed his hat-trick and left Chelsea with a hill to climb.

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Villarreal pulled off a shock win against Bayern Munich.

Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the game in the opening ten minutes, and a resilient performance at the back meant they managed to not concede a goal.

Liverpool take a 3-1 lead over Benfica to Anfield in the second leg, while Manchester City have a 1-0 advantage over Atletico Madrid.

The second leg ties will be played on April 12 and 13.
